After the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) quit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) this month, now another NDA ally has decided to sever ties with BJP led NDA. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on Saturday became the latest NDA ally to leave the alliance. Accusing the BJP of betraying the trust of the Gorkhas, organising chief of GJM, LM Lama said that the new leadership under Binay Tamang will not continue to have a relationship with the BJP and pointed at the recent statement of the West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh where he said that the party had an electoral alliance with GJM and that there was no agreement for a common political resolution.

“The claim made by the BJP that GJM is a friend and a constituent of the NDA and the slogan of PM Modi where he said that dream of the Gorkhas is my dream have all been exposed by this statement,” said Lama. “The BJP is neither sympathetic nor sincere towards the Gorkhas.”

He further said that because of the alliance, the GJM supported the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections twice -- in 2009 and in 2014. While Jaswant Singh was elected from the constituency in 2009, in 2014, SS Ahluwalia was elected.

Making a reference to the 104-day long lockdown in Darjeeling in June last year over the separate state issue, Lama said that the alliance has led to an environment of mistrust and political disturbance.

“13 precious lives were lost during the 104-day-long bandh, and hundreds were put in jail. Yet, neither the BJP MP of Darjeeling, nor the Government in Delhi spoke a word on the issue. The home minister assured us of a tripartite talk within 15 days of GJM withdrawing the bandh. It's been more than six months now and the home Minister has done nothing to redeem his promise,” said Lama.

In November last year, after the strife was lifted, the GJM had suspended former party chief Bimal Gurung, secretary Roshan Giri among others for six months. Binay Tamang took over the party soon after.
