SpiceJet flight suffers tyre burst at Chennai airport, all passengers safe

A Chennai-Delhi SpiceJet flight with 119 passengers onboard made an emergency landing after the aircraft suffered a tyre burst during take-off on Thursday.

A Chennai-Delhi SpiceJet flight with 119 passengers onboard made an emergency landing after the aircraft suffered a tyre burst during take-off on Thursday.

The incident took place around 2:25 pm. The Chennai-Delhi bound SG-106 flight, which also reported a hydraulic problem, returned to the airport minutes later.

All 199 passengers were safely deplaned and taken to the terminal. 

Aircraft landed safely but is now stuck near the runway, with another tyre burst on the starboard side. 

"SpiceJet Chennai-Delhi flight suffered a suspected tyre burst at the time of takeoff. The crew decided to turn back and landed safely at Chennai. Passengers were deplaned safely in a normal manner and taken to a terminal building," said SpiceJet spokesperson 

Chennai Airport said that due to damage to the main runway and aircraft stuck in taxiway near the runway, a secondary runway is in use currently.

In another incident, an Ethiopian airlines cargo flight had an emergency landing at the Chennai airport due to the lack of fuel in the aircraft.
