A “memo” listing the date of Afzal Guru’s execution was delivered at his home in Seer Jagir in Sopore on Monday, two days after he was hanged and buried at Tihar jail.
“Our wounds reopened when the postman came with the letter. You can well understand how one feels in such a situation,” Guru’s brother Aijaz said.
The jail memo (top), signed by the superintendent of Tihar jail (No 3) , was addressed to Guru’s wife Tabassum. It was prepared on February 6, but dispatched through Speed Post on February 8. “The letter booked in Delhi on February 8 early morning reached Srinagar the next day,” John Samuel, chief postmaster general, J&K circle, said. “The flight reaches here at 1.30pm; packets in Srinagar are delivered on the same day and in other places the next day. Since it was Sunday, the letter was delivered on Monday morning.”
The presence of security forces has compounded problems. “We are in mourning. But out relatives cannot visit us... They should lift the siege,” Guru’s brother Aijaz said.
Last rites: Criticised for not informing Guru’s execution date to his family in time, the government may allow them to perform religious rites at the burial site. “We can consider the family’s wish to perform Fatiha,” said home minister Sushilkumar Shinde.
