On the seventh day of the spectrum auction, the total bid value jumped up to Rs 96,000 crore, higher by Rs 3,800 crore from the previous day, as eight telecom companies (telcos) bid aggressively in the 800 Mega Hertz (MHz), 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands.

A statement issued by the ministry of communication and information technology (IT), said there was "brisk bidding" with activity requirement set at 100%. "Aggressive bidding is going on in 1800 MHz, 900 MHz and 800 MHz bands. At present, over 84% of the spectrum has been provisionally allocated to bidders at a value of approximately Rs 96,000 crores. Majority of service areas are going at a premium over reserve price," it said.

The value of airwaves, allocated provisionally to the bidders, shot up on Wednesday after dipping to Rs 92,200 crore from Rs 94,000 crore. The demand for spectrum in the 2,100 MHz remained lukewarm even as there were no bidders in Andhra Pradesh and Mumbai circles.

G Krishna Kumar, telecom professional from Bangalore, said aggressive bidding in the 800 MHz band could primarily be because it can be used for long-term evolution (LTE) services. Another analyst, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it could be Reliance Jio, which is looking to launch its country-wide 4G services, playing in this band.

The other telcos participating in the auction are Bharti, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel, Tata Tele and Reliance Communications. With 43 rounds of bidding completed, the action has shifted from 900 MHz to 800 MHz and 1,800 MHz, which has contained the total value of the bids that all set to break the previous record of Rs 1.06 lakh crore on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, there wasn't much traction in the 900 MHz band as in the beginning, with bid prices in this bands stabilising in almost all circles. In 800 MHz, there was fierce bidding in all circles except Bihar, Karnataka, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, UP (east) and UP (west).

In the 1,800 MHz band, leaving aside Bihar and UP (west), there was intense bidding in all circles. The government said there was still some spectrum unsold and bidding would continue. The auction will be wrapped up when the demand for spectrum in all bands is zero.
