The parent community in government schools will soon be able to keep a daily tab on what's going on – not just with their children but also their teachers! Taking a cue from Gujarat, Union human resource development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani has moved to ensure that parents get a daily report of what has been taught and also that teachers get to work on time.

No bunking, no truancy and no slacking off – the HRD ministry's Saral Darpan programme aims to do all of that and more as it turns the mirror on government school teachers.

To begin with, the programme will kick off in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in four states. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled states of Maharashtra and Rajasthan will be the first two states, said an official, while disclosing details of the decision taken last week.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Board has approved the programme in 1,000 schools. This will then be extended to Sarvodaya and Navodaya schools.

Giving details of the programme, an official disclosed that teachers will have to go through biometric attendance to ensure punctuality. Besides, the school will also prepare a daily report and send an SMS to parents of every student.

A data centre to coordinate the project is likely to come up in Mumbai.

"All possible details of whatever a student is taught at school throughout the day will be sent to the parents on their registered phone numbers. This will not only allow parents to know what their ward has studied at school, but will also ensure that teachers are punctual and are following the prescribed pattern," an official told dna.

The project is being looked at as a step towards helping the formulation of guidelines of the School Standard and Evaluation (SSE) initiative of the ministry. With SSE, the ministry plans define the minimum parameters for teaching practices in the school system.

The practice of keeping parents in the loop is already being followed by Gujarat state education department -- state schools maintain and circulate a daily report card to the parents.
