The Congress has named Rajani Patil as the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll, necessitated by the demise of Vilasrao Deshmukh. Patil was handpicked by the Congress high command by rejecting two candidates recommended by the state Congress leadership.
CM Prithviraj Chavan had been batting for former state minister Rohidas Patil. He, however, said on Tuesday that the decision to nominate Patil was taken after considering all possible candidates. "Three criteria went in Patil’s favour – her caste, region and gender," Chavan said.
State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre had been advocating for party’s state in-charge Mohan Prakash, who didn’t share good rapport with Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi. Chavan too was opposed to his candidature.
Patil will file her nomination papers on Wednesday.
