In a no holds barred attack, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi tore into an "arrogant" and "power intoxicated" Modi government for using every ploy to destroy the Congress and exhorted the cadre not to bow down to the arrogance of power and make an India which is free of revenge, fear, partiality and arrogance.

"I want to commend our party workers of those states where Congress is not in power. Despite being persecuted and hounded they are putting up a brave fight to expose the crimes and failures of state governments," she said.

In a fiery mood, Sonia accused the Modi government of being dictatorial — neglecting Constitution, disrespecting parliament, using divisive ideology, slapping false cases against opposition and persecuting the media.

"People now have understood that promises of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas and Na Khaunga Na Khane Dunga, radio talk Mann ki Baat were all only and only a 'dramebazi' to usurp power," she said drawing thunderous applause at the 84th plenary session of the Congress.

Recalling how the party had emerged much stronger after Indira Gandhi returned to Lok Sabha in the 1978 by-election from Karnataka's Chikmagalur, Sonia hoped that Congress win in Karnataka assembly elections would again be a turning point that will give a "new direction to the country's politics."

After leading the party for 19 years as longest serving president Sonia had stepped down last year and make way for Rahul Gandhi. She, however, continues to lead the UPA and this week, had also hosted leaders from 19 opposition parties for a dinner to consolidate opposition.

Aiming to assuage sulking senior leaders, she asserted that Rahul Gandhi has taken party's responsibility at a very challenging time and asked all party members to work in a cohesive manner, leaving aside their personal ego and ambition to ensure party's win.

"Win of the party will be country's win, it will be a win of all of us," she said.

The most important issue is that under the new president, the Congress should again emerge as a party capable of setting the agenda of the country, becomes again a party capable of representing the hopes and aspirations of all sections our society that is full of diversity, she said.
