Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi pay tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on 27th death anniversary

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bombing at Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday paid homage to husband and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 27th death anniversary at Veer Bhumi in Delhi. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former President was also present with the former Congress President during the event.

 

 

 

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi also visted the memorial to pay tribute to their father. Priyanka's husband Robert Vadra also accompanied them to the memorial to pay floral tribute to his father-in-law.

 

 

 

Former President Pranab Mukherjee also was in the attendance to pay homage to the former PM.

Earlier on Monday, Rahul Gandhi remembered his father in an emotional tweet.

"My father taught me that hate is a prison for those who carry it. Today, on his death anniversary, I thank him for teaching me to love and respect all beings, the most valuable gifts a father can give a son. Rajiv Gandhi, those of us that love you hold you forever in our hearts," Gandhi tweeted.

 

 

Other leaders including former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shind and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also visisted the memorial to pay floral tributes.

 

 

Rajiv Gandhi took office after the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

In his memory, May 21 is observed as Anti-Terrorism day in India.
