Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said PM has turned out to be a master re-packager, a skillful salesman, a sharp headline grabber.
On a day when the government has called an all-party meeting to break the deadlock in the Parliament, opposition Congress decided to further up the ante. The charge was led by none other than Congress President Sonia Gandhi who launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said PM has turned out to be a master re-packager, a skillful salesman and a sharp headline grabber.
Addressing Congress Parliamentary party meeting, Sonia Gandhi said, "The PM has been very free with his promises yet he seems totally incapable of delivering on them. On one hand, he never misses an opportunity to claim moral high ground on transparency, integrity and accountability. On the other hand, he has been conspicuous by his deafening silence on blatant transgressions by his External Affairs Minister and two of his CMs. "
She also said that the Parliamentary majority does not give anyone a license to escape accountability.
Stating that the PM has turned out to be a master re-packager and a clever news manager, Sonia said, "We aren't being aggressive just to match BJP's aggression of past, we are forced to take our position because of government's brazen attitude. There is a mountain of incontrovertible evidence in the public domain for PM to require resignations of EAM and the two CMs."
The Congress President also said that there will be no productive discussions and meaningful proceedings as long as those responsible for gross wrong-doings remain in office.
Sonia Gandhi also questioned, "Has BJP forgotten it's author of 'resign-now-debate-later' Parliament practise which it has used on at least five different occasions since 1993?"
She further added, "The current session of Parliament is a relatively short one but it is already proving eventful for one the reason that is the gross insensitivity of the Modi government to public opinion."
Stating that Modi appears to retreat into a "maun vrat", she added, "There is a scandal involving his colleagues. Today, we have to listen to sermons on parliamentary behaviour from those who not only defended but also advocated disruption as a legitimate tactic when they were in the opposition."
"Yesterday's agitators in both the Houses have suddenly become today's champions of debate and discussion. Parliamentary majority does not give anyone a license to escape accountability," she added.
On the accusation that the Congress party lacks statesmanship after stalling debate on Gurdaspur, Sonia Gandhi said, "I would like to remind those who levelled this allegation about what happened on 28 November 2008 when anti-terror operations were underway in Mumbai, all of a sudden the-then Gujarat CM (Narendra Modi) appears in the city and, instead of supporting PM, indulges in grandstanding and criticises him. Was this statesmanship?" she asked.
Sonia Gandhi made it clear that the party will not allow discussion in Parliament till the time resignations are tendered, a clear sign that proceedings are likely to be stalled this week as well.
