Aam Aadmi Party MLA Somnath Bharti, currently under the scanner after being named in a domestic abuse complaint by his wife, once again failed to show up before the Delhi Commissioner for Women, on Friday, after failing to answer his summons previously on June 26.

Instead, he wrote a highly defensive letter to the DCW Chairperson Barkha Singh Shukla charging her with politicising the issue and claiming that the DCW no longer had jurisdiction over his case.

Bharti wrote in response to his summons that since his “matter” has been with the police since June 11, the day his estranged wife Lipika Mitra filed a police complaint, the DCW no longer had jurisdiction.

Bharti added further that Shukla had “failed to live up to the expectations” of a DCW chairperson by holding a press conference for Mitra without hearing out both sides. When Mitra had addressed the media from Shukla’s house, Bharti’s mother had been denied entry inside, which, Bharti wrote, showed Shukla’s interest in politicising the situation instead of “resolving the issue to help a family reunite”.

Ignoring Mitra’s claims of wanting to talk to the media herself, Bharti placed the responsibility in Shukla, saying that she held the press conference “knowing fully well that my wife was in an agitated mind and whatever she will say would damage her reputation and that of the family”.

“Such misuse/abuse of DCW by you will not be forgotten and forgiven,” wrote Bharti also accusing Shukla of defaming him. Shukla held a press conference on July 2 where she called him and fellow AAP leader Kumar Vishwas “anti-social elements”.

Bharti’s letter then went on to attack Shukla over how she dealt with the complaint against Vishwas and his wife by a female AAP volunteer, who had accused them of not denying properly that Vishwas and the volunteer had been involved in a relationship. “

“Had you really been interested in women welfare, you would not have entertained the complaint against Dr. Kumar Vishwas at the first place as the woman had already approached the police,” wrote Bharti accusingly. He ended the letter by asking her to not do anything further at least in the interest of his two children, making it a point to explains how their names are derived from combining those of his and his wife.

In reply, Shukla told the press “We have now posted the matter for July 6 and have written to the DCP (South West) to ensure Bharti’s appearance before the Commission on that day.”

Mitra too appeared angry at Bharti’s absence, saying she agreed with Shukla that he was an “anti-social element”, with no respect for women, and that she would go ahead with her police complaint.
