Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said poor turnout at the Srinagar parliamentary constituency where repoll was conducted on Thursday, was a matter of concern. “The 2% turnout at the Srinagar is a matter of concern. It has been decided that something had to be done about it,” Singh said on Friday while interacting with media persons.

After the Srinagar parliamentary constituency witnessed a 7.14% on April 9, a repoll was held for which only over 35,000 voters turned up.

Referring to BJP youth leader Yogesh Varshney, who had announced an award of Rs 11 lakh to whoever beheads Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Singh said that no act of violence would be tolerated. “He is not even a district level worker and the party does not endorse his views. No violence will be tolerated and action according to the law will be taken against him,” Singh said.

Asked about Kulbhushan Jadhav, who has been sentenced to death in Pakistan for alleged spying, Singh said, “India will fight till the finish to acquit Jadhav.”

Talking about the law and order situation in West Bengal, he said that it was a state subject and that the Centre can only appeal to the state about maintaining law and order properly. “There is no place for any confrontation in a healthy democracy. One must not forget the fact that political chaos, political violence cannot encroach upon good governance and development,” he added, but refused to comment on the cases filed by the state government against the state BJP president Dilip Ghosh for allegedly taking out rallies with arms on the occasion of Ram Navami. Ghosh, sitting beside Singh, said, “We will reply to the state government on next Ram Navami.”

Bouyed by the results of the bypolls at Kanthi Dakshin assembly election in East Midnapore district, Singh said that plans and strategies were afoot for the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly elections.

At another event on Fridya, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti defended the rallies during Ram Navami, saying that they were part of Bengal’s tradition. “Prevention of deteriorating law and order situation in the state is the responsibility of the police here. The only thing which Mamata’s government does here is falsely implicate BJP leaders in different cases,” she said at an event in Howrah. She added that looking at the results of the Kanthi Dakshin bypolls, where there was a quantum rise in the BJP’s share of votes, it could be said that in the next assembly elections the BJP would come to power with a clear majority. “We have seen it happen in Assam and Harayana where previously we had only one or two MLAs. In the next assembly elections here, the BJP will win with a clear majority."
