A social security agreement that will benefit Indian workers in the United Kingdom and not withholding extraditions including that of liquor baron Vijay Mallya on grounds that Indian jails are not good enough are two key proposals put forward by New Delhi to London recently.

Top government sources said these two issues were taken up by union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi during his visit to UK last week.

The social security agreement is aimed at benefitting those Indians who work for a few years in UK and come back. "We have asked them to make the amount paid by them towards social security schemes transferable when they return. This will result in Indians working there getting about 0.5 billion pounds," said a government officials.

Sources said India has such an agreement with 40 odd countries.

In the wake of extradition requests pending with UK including that of Vijay Malya, sources said the Home Secretary said that the prisoners cannot be treated any differently than other Indian inmates but guaranteed safety in jails to anybody extradited from UK.

Sources said condition of Indian jails has been one of the major concerns raised by courts in UK. "We also gave an assurance that Indian jails match the facilities of European prisons which are considered standard," the official added.

The Indian delegation led by the union home secretary also stated that the size of the cells is larger than European jails and proper medical facilities are available.

Issues relating to counter terrorism, social media and illegal immigration were also taken up during various meetings. UK authorities said that the number of illegal immigrants from Indian could be as much as 50,000.
