The Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan and other social organisations  on Monday started a five-day dharna, demanding arrest of the persons involved in the alleged killing of Zafar Khan in Pratapgarh.

Social activist Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey questioned the objective behind the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Rajasthan, by alleging that it has resulted in increase in sexual violence against women. “Why punish the poor and deprive them of their dignity when it is the government which has failed to deliver even toilets to the people,” Dey said.

“Unfortunately, the policy of shaming people by taking photographs when they are relieving themselves has put the blame on poor people for the condition in which they live. It also  encourages men to commit sexual violence under Section 354 C of the IPC, including voyeurism as we have seen in the Pratapgarh case,” he added.

“Are toilets so important that shameful photographs of women should to be taken?,” social activist Aruna Roy asked.

She demanded immediate suspension and arrest of all the three sanitation workers named in the FIR along with Ashok Jain, the chairperson of the municipality as the lynching was done by the Swaach Bharat Abhiyan team, who were the sanitation workers of the municipality in the presence of its chairperson.

It must be mentioned that the policy of shaming is not new. Last year on June 3, in chief minister’s home district of Jhalawar, the District Education Officer had issued a circular, asking teachers would leave their homes at 5am to not only generate awareness against open defecation but also take photographs of those defecating in the open and send it through WhatsApp to senior officials on a daily basis.
