Social activist Swami Agnivesh was attacked allegedly by BJP Yuva Morcha workers in Jharkhand's Pakur district on Tuesday.

According to some reports, Swami was attacked by the BJP workers with activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Agnivesh was staying reportedly at Muskan Hotel, from where he was scheduled to attend the 195th Damin Mahotsav at Littpara.

Swami Agnivesh alleged that there was no police personnel present when the incident took place.

"Even when I repeatedly called SP and DM they didn't turn up. I was told that ABVP & BJP Yuva Morcha workers want to protest. I told them there's no need to protest, they can come in & talk. No one came in at that time," Agnivesh told ANI.

"They suddenly attacked and hurled abuses at me. I want that they are identified from CCTV footage and video available with media and action be taken against them," he added.

Reports also said that a mob also raised slogans of ‘Swami go back’.

"I am against any sort of violence. I am known as a peace-loving person. I don't know why I was attacked," Agnivesh told NDTV.

The development comes amid the Supreme Court saying that horrendous acts of mobocracy cannot be allowed to become a new norm and has to be curbed with iron hands.

Agnivesh was a minister in Haryana government in 1970s before he quit politics.

He was also a member of Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement but had a fallout over an allegation that he wanted the then UPA government to deal strongly with the campaign.
