A slipper was hurled at BJP's Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan while he was visiting the house of Jawaharlal Nehru University Dalit scholar J. Muthukrishnan at Salem in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Muthukrishnan had allegedly committed suicide on Monday. Radhakrishnan was in Salem to pay his last tributes to the deceased student. The body of the research scholar was buried after a family ritual at Sevapettai burial ground on Thursday afternoon.

As Radhakrishnan was addressing the media, some students and activists including members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) started raising slogans against the BJP-led Central government.

In the melee, a man allegedly hurled a chappal at the Union minister, which, however, missed him and hit the mike of the news channels. Police arrested Solomon, 31, state organiser of Makkal Munnani, a fringe group, for hurling the slipper at the minister. Radhakrishnan described the incident as "unwanted" and asked the Tamil Nadu BJP unit not to make it a big issue.

Mr Radhakrishnan said that a five-member doctor team has already submitted the postmortem report of Muthukrishnan, based on which a judicial probe will be initiated. When asked about Muthukrishnan's alleged suicide, he said, "I will not accept (accusations) that this (death) has happened because of the BJP coming to power. Such incidents have been happening at many places for the last 60 years."

Earlier, the BJP leader had placed a wreath on the body of Muthukrishnan, while Salem Collector Sampath paid floral tributes and handed over a cheque of Rs 3 lakh announced by the state government to Jeevanandam, father of Muthukrishnan. The body was brought this morning from Chennai and kept at Muthukrishnan's home in Salem. A large number of people including students and activists of various political parties and leaders paid homage to the deceased JNU scholar.
