The last post was sounded to pay homage to fallen police sub-inspector Imran Ahmad Tak at Udhampur district in Jammu division on Saturday. He was given a hero's farewell for valiantly taking on armed car-borne militants at Zakura in Srinagar on Friday. He suffered grievous wounds in the shootout and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

In the gun battle, a militant of Al-Qaeda affiliate, Ansar Ghazwat ul Hind, Mugees Ahmad Mir was killed, while another was apprehended.

Meanwhile, the security establishment was aghast that the mortal remains of the slain officer were transported overnight from Sringar to Udhampur in an ambulance rather than a chopper as is the norm.

In Udhampur, Tak was given an emotional farewell, with people, as a mark of respect, closing the market to pay homage to the martyr. The journey stopped at several places with local people garlanding the slain officer. "Martyr SI Imran Tak reaches home. Basantgarh market closed. Martyr garlanded at many places en-route", tweeted Jammu and Kashmir police. At the funeral, top ministers, police officers and other people converged to lay a floral wreath on his mortal remains. Leading the nation in the homage was Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Dr Nirmal Singh, state BJP chief Sat Sharma and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga.

"Attended the wreath laying ceremony of Shaheed SI Imran Tak in Udhampur, who sacrificed his life while fighting millitants in Zakura Kashmir. Salute to the brave soul. My sympathies to the bereaved family. Perpetrators of this attack will be dealt sternly. Jai Hind", tweeted Dr Singh.
