A six-year-old student from the prominent Ryan International School in South Delhi drowned in a water tank on the school premises on Saturday. The young boy was brought to the Spinal Injuries Hospital in Vasant Kunj, a mere kilometre away, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The boy was attending a poetry competition held for his class when during the 7th period he went missing. School authorities found him lying in a pit under the amphitheatre sometime after noon. “We received a call from the hospital authorities at 2.40pm, informing us about the unfortunate incident,” said Prem Nath, deputy commissioner of police (South) who was present on the school premises. “Several police teams are on the spot and investigation is under way,” he added.

The body of the boy was later shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for the post-mortem. “Prima facie, the boy’s death appears to be from drowning. However, the final conclusion will be made after the two doctors who performed the autopsy examine the scene of the incident,” said Dr Sudhir Gupta, Head of Department, Forensics and Toxicology, AIIMS. “We received a special request to perform the autopsy on a priority basis to which we obliged,” he added.

According to sources, a case of negligence may be filed against the school authorities. It is not clear why the school did not inform the police officials immediately and why the hospital authorities contacted the police more than two hours after the child’s death.

Deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia has ordered the district magistrate to probe the case. He has also ordered an investigation to ascertain exact role of school management.

Ryan International is one of the most prominent schools and had been ranked among the top 10 in the country. The child’s parents are residents of Sultanpuri, in the southern suburbs of Delhi. The father works in the Radiology Department at AIIMS.
