Six more die in hooch tragedy in Kanpur, toll rises to 11

With six more deaths, the toll in the hooch tragedy in Kanpur and Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 11. Over a dozen person, who consumed spurious liquor, are battling for life in different hospitals in the district. The police have arrested 11 persons, including a relative of the former Samajwadi Party MLA, in connection with the tragedy.

After five deaths were reported Kanpur city on Saturday, six people died in Rura village in Kanpur Rural (Dehat) on Sunday after consuming spurious liquor. They have been identified as Shyamu, Chunna, Kushwaha, Narbendra Singh and Hari Mishra. The shop owner Satish Mishra is on the run.

The Police have seized the shop and found that hundreds of pouches and quarters of the country-made liquor were set on fire by the owner and the salesman of the shop before escaping after the hooch tragedy in Rura village in Kanpur Dehat.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the victims. He has directed the district administration to arrest those behind the sale of illicit liquor and ordered for the suspension of the excise officials.

The Police have so far arrested 11 persons, including Vinay Singh who is a close relative of the former Samajwadi Party MLA, involved in the sale of illicit in the affected areas. The police is baffled how spurious liquor was sold from the licensed shops in Kanpur City and Dehat.

Earlier, six persons, including a retired Police Constable, had died in Suraar, Dool and Hetpur villages under Sahendi Police Station in Kanpur city after consuming spurious liquor bought from a government-approved country-liquor shop. They have identified as Ramesh, Umesh Yadav, Rachnesh Shukla, Rajendra Tomar, Jagjeevan Lal (Retd Police Constable) and Ramjeevan Kori. About a dozen others are battling for life in different hospitals in the district.
