Opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president P S Golay today surrendered before a court here in a corruption case of 1990s when he was a minister in Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government.

Golay had been sentenced to one year imprisonment by a lower court in December last year which was upheld by Sikkim High Court in June.

After his surrender before the district and sessions court at Sichey here, Golay said he could not surrender immediately after his conviction because he was undergoing medical treatment outside the state.

He claimed he was a victim of political vendetta by the ruling SDF.

The five-time MLA was taken to the state jail at Rongyek near Gangtok where he will be serving his sentence.

A founder member of the SDF, Golay was named in a chargesheet filed by vigilance department in 2010 for misappropriation of Rs 9.5 lakh meant for distributing cows to beneficiaries under a state government scheme for a period when he was animal husbandry minister in 1994-1999.

Golay resigned from SDF in September 2013 alleging nepotism and lack of proper leadership and floated the SKM.
