Last one year has been a major struggle for Sachin Fatangare, a resident of Sangamner in Ahmednagar district, who has been abandoned by his family and forced to live at an old-age home due to his failing health.

The 34-year-old suffers from an autoimmune disorder called 'Ankylosing Spondylitis'. It is a chronic disease that affects males between the age of 19-40, affecting their spine and legs. It is a lifestyle disorder which is affecting young adults in India at a fast pace.

Despite being a BPL (below poverty line)-card holder, the young civil engineer has failed to receive treatment for the illness as his name is not there in the SECC (socio-economic caste census) list pulled by the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The scheme is currently using the data from 2011 and thus any card-holders added post-2011 are not eligible for Ayushman benefits.

Sachin requires Rs 8,50,000 for his hip-transplant surgery, which will help him stand straight. He has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for help to get Ayushman benefits. He cited the example of the farmer from Maharashtra who also needed a hip-replacement surgery and had attempted to drink poison outside the Chief Minister's residence this February. He underwent an operation in March and recently got discharged.

"Both my hip-joints are fused and thus I need a joint-replacement surgery. I am not able to stand straight and the condition is very painful. My family cannot afford this treatment and thus have left me here," said Fatangare.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a type of progressive arthritis caused due to an inflammation of the joints. This disorder starts by affecting the SI, or the Sacroilitis joint, where the spine joins the pelvis, and soon progresses to other larger joints, affecting the postures and sometimes mobility. In some cases, it also affects eyes causing a reoccurrence of conjunctivitis. In research done on a study-size of 8,145 people, it was concluded that over seven people in every 10,000 suffer from AS. People suffering from this disease are known to have HLA-B27 gene.
