Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the role of BJP founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, saying that his dedication and hard work was an integral reason behind a part of Bengal remaining with India during partition.

“He was very passionate about the development of West Bengal. It was the result of his understanding, prudence and activism that a part of Bengal could be saved and it is still a part of India,” the PM said in his speech.

PM Modi also hailed Mukherjee’s foresight and passion for India to become self-sufficient. “He had wanted India to develop heavy industries and also pay full attention to MSME, handloom, textiles and cottage industry. There was also a special emphasis by Dr. Mukherjee on indigenization of India's defence production, in the establishment of four most successful mega projects- Chittaranjan locomotive works factory, Hindustan aircraft factory, Sindri fertilizer factory and Damodar Valley Corporation and other river valley projects, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee contributed significantly,” the PM said.

The PM also hailed the first year of the success of the goods and service tax that was inaugurated last year on June 30. “GST is a great example of Cooperative federalism, where all the states decided to take a unanimous decision in the interest of the nation, and then such a huge tax reform could be implemented in the country.  Before the onset of GST scheme, there were 17 different types of taxes prevailing in the country, but now only one tax is applicable in the entire country. GST is not only the victory of integrity but it is also a celebration of honesty. Earlier, in the case of taxation and allied affairs in the country, there were rampant complaints of Inspector Raj,” the PM said.

He also spoke of the uniqueness of the fourth edition of International Yoga Day, which was held on June 21. “On one side, Saudi Arabia demonstration was led by women and on the other side, Indian and Chinese troops jointly organised yoga in Ladakh. This is proof that yoga goes beyond boundaries and forms a bond with society,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi praised doctors and medical professionals for their contribution to nation's development. "It is the mother who gives birth but often it is the doctor who bestows people with a rebirth,” remarked PM Modi.
