Stating that primary-level madrasas are "promoting" ISIS ideology in India, Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to shut down all primary-level madrasas in the country.

"...if primary-level madrasas are not shut down, about half of the country's population will become supporters of the ISIS ideology in 15 years' time," Rizvi said in his letter to the Prime Minister.

He, however, is open to the idea that Muslim children can take admission in madrasas only after completing their high school.

Taking admission in madrasas after schooling will not only help them take normal education till the high school level along with children of other religions but also will deter them from getting easily influenced by radical Islamic fundamentalist thinking, the Shia Waqf Board chairman said.

"In the rural areas of the country, the primary madrasas in the name of donations are harming the future of our children and promoting Islamist ideas," he said in his letter. Rizvi said in Kashmir the ISIS is luring children attending madrasas.

"It can be seen that children are soft targets for running any mission and at this point of time ISIS is a dangerous terror organisation which is gradually getting hold over the Muslim population across the world," he said in his letter.

"This is damaging both the country and the future of the Muslim children," Rizvi rued.

Rizvi had earlier too supported secular values and backed construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and Uniform Civil Code.
