In an attempt to handle exigencies in services, the Railway Board has decided to increase the age limit of retired employees for re-engagement from the current 62 years to 65 years.
The move has come as Indian Railways is facing an uphill task to augment services at par with the increase in railway traffic and introduction of new routes and trains and facing the crunch because of staff shortage.
Moreover, the railways also wants to play safe and arrest the mounting numbers of accidents. Accidents because of problem in tracks have seen an increase from 21 in 2014-15 to 24 in 2015-16 and 38 in 2016-17.
There are about 1.25 lakh vacancies in Railways which are related to the running of trains and maintenance of tracks. Vacancies for profiles such as drivers, guards, gangmen and other technical staff such as supervisors and technicians involved in services like deep screening etc have not been filled. Besides, there is a shortfall of about 1.25 lakh non-mechanical staff such as clerks and travelling ticket examiners (TTEs).
In an order to all the General Managers (Personnel), the Railway Board has also asked them to extend the validity of the scheme of re-engagement of retired employees from the existing validity till September 14, 2018 to December 1, 2019.
Sources said, this would enable in smooth running of railway operations as the retired staff is well experienced and can deliver the results till the time new recruitment are mad and trained. The order will benefit existing railway personnel to re-engage and also those who are retiring.
