In a shocking incident, police in Maharashtra's Sangli district unearthed a female foeticide racket on Sunday, after at least nineteen aborted female foetuses were found dumped.

The incident came to light when the police were probing a case related to a death of pregnant woman during her abortion at the private hospital of Dr Babasaheb Khidrapure in Miraj.

The racket was busted after the 26-year-old pregnant woman's father Sunil Jadhav approached the police to register a complaint against his son-in-law and the doctor after his daughter death on February 28.

During the investigation, when the police reached the stream in Mhaisal village in presence of Nayab Tehsildar, they found at least 19 foetuses wrapped in a plastic bags, which were later removed with the help of JCB.

According to Maharashtra Times, accused Khidrapure holds a Bachelor's degree in Homoeopathy and he is a resident of Shirol town's Kanwad village. He had been allegedly aborting female foetuses for the last 10 years.

Dattatray Shinde, Superintendent of Sangli police said, "These foetuses were aborted and buried with an intention of disposing them off. Some foetuses were found in a decomposed state, while bones and flesh in some plastic bag."

Victim's husband Pravin Jamdade had taken his wife to the hospital for abortion as she was carrying a girl child for the third time.

When it was found that the woman was dead during abortion, the doctor said her condition was critical and shifted her to the city's prestigious hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival, said the report.

However, to hide the matter, the victim's husband took the body to Manirajuri to perform her last rites, but the villagers suspected some foul play and refused to cremate the body.

After the post-mortem, the victim's angry parents cremated the body in front of the husband's residence on March 3.

A case has been registered against Jamdade and the doctor, who is on the run.
