Former Thane MP Sanjeev Naik will be the first one to switch over from the Nationalist Congress Party to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sources have said.

According to the strategy chalked out by the former MP, he is first likely to join the BJP, along with his supporters, and this will be followed by Naik senior.

Sanjeev Naik had to face defeat at the hands of Shiv Sena's Rajan Vichare in Lok Sabha elections, which were held in May.

Similarly, Ganesh Naik, who recently lost Belapur assembly seat to BJP's Manda Mhatre, has been cosying up to BJP for quite some time now. In fact, sources have revealed that the process had started after NCP's defeat in Lok

Sabha elections. And now with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections set to be held in April, Ganesh Naik does not want to lose control over the corporation due to the Narendra Modi wave and BJP factor.

Sources have, however, said that though things are not clear as to what move Sandeep Naik will make, it is likely that he will continue as NCP MLA from Airoli.

Ganesh Naik, a former Shiv Sena man, had switched over to NCP after the formation of this party by Sharad Pawar in 1999. On Thursday, he met party corporators to seek their opinion and arriving at a consensus.

Naik, who was also a minister in the then Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra, had to leave Sena over some differences with party higher ups. Thereafter, he was elected twice on NCP ticket and has been a minister in the state government for almost last 15 years.

Ever since the formation of NMMC, Ganesh Naik-led group has been dominated it all these years. In the present House also, of the 89 elected corporators, 54 are from NCP. However, looking at the changing political scenario, observers are of the view that the Naiks may lose this domination also well. So the move to tie up with BJP could be from the strategy of civic polls.

Till the time of going to the press, Ganesh Naik was closeted in a meeting with his corporators and staunch followers. If he joins BJP, this could be a big push to the party which barely had a single corporator in the civic body till date. Presently, Vijaya Gharat is the only BJP corporator in the corporation.
