Dark shadows of militancy have now engulfed Syed Ali Shah Geelani led All Parties Hurriyat Conference after the son of the newly elected chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai reportedly joined Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in Kashmir.

Pictures of 27-year-old Junaid Ashraf Sehrai brandishing AK 47 riffle went viral after it was released on social networking sites on Saturday.  Wearing skull cap, Junaid alias Amaar Bhai was seen with the riffle signaling his joining the Hizbul, a usual trait of the militant outfit to announce the joining of the new cadre to the ranks.

Junaid, an MBA pass-out, had left for Friday prayers but did not return home in the upmarket Bagaat area of Srinagar city. On Saturday the family approached the Police Station Saddar and formally lodged a missing report. Hours later Junaid’s picture surfaced on the social media setting the speculations about his disappearance to rest.

“Family has approached us in the afternoon with an application that he is missing. We are looking into it. As per their application, he has not returned after the Friday prayers. We are just enquiring into it”, said Vidhi Kumar Birdhi, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Kashmir Range.

Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Shesh Paul Vaid said they have no confirmation (about his joining Hizbul) but they are verifying the reports.

“I do not know (whether he has joined the militant outfit). It (picture) is on the social media and we are verifying it. They have lodged a missing report in Saddar police station”, he said.

Dr Vaid urged the parents of Junaid to make an appeal to his son to return back. “I request his father and mother to appeal their son (to return)”, he said.

Junaid has joined militancy five days after his 73-year-old father Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai succeeded 89-year-old Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and became the chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH), the main constituent of the hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference.

Shortly after taking over as TeH chief, Sehrai created flutter by openly criticizing those people who support the global jihadist organizations including ISIS in Kashmir.

This is the second time in the last four months when highly qualified youth have joined militancy in Kashmir. On January 7 shock and disbelief have gripped Kashmir after a 26-year-old PhD scholar in Aligarh Muslim University Mannan Bashir Wani joined Hizbul Mujhadeen in the border district of Kupwara.
