Dadar's Shivaji Park will soon have the highest flag of the country. For this, Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale has sought the approval of Flag Foundation of India and submitted a proposal to Mumbai Heritage Committee. At present, the highest tricolour of the country flutters at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters in Belapur.

While the tricolour at NMMC headquarters is 70-metre high, the one to be installed at Shivaji Park will be nearly 74 metres (more than 240 ft tall). If all goes well, Shewale is hopeful to get his project completed before Maharashtra Day on May 1.

The highest flag will give Shivaji Park a unique identity in the city — it will be visible from Bandra-Worli Sea Link. "The work on the height of the pole for the flag has already started. The length and breadth of the flag now has to be worked out. I always had a dream of taking up this project. I am glad that it is actually happening. Flag Foundation of India is helping me out with the details as it is a question of the national flag and we cannot afford to go wrong," said Shewale, who has been working on the project for past several months.

Shewale said he wants the flag pole to be located near Balasaheb Thackeray's 'Smruti Sthal' at Shivaji Park. "I have submitted the proposal to the heritage committee and hopefully things should be in place soon. Anyway, each year the flag-hoisting ceremony on January 26 and May 1 happens here; so, this permanent flag here should not be an issue," he said.

The project will cost Rs50 lakh, a part of which the MP is planning to spend from his own fund. He will also seek help from other sources. To ensure that the flag does not droop due to lack of wind, a motor-operated fan will be placed at a particular height to keep it fluttering.
