Warning the BJP that creating a personality cult around Prime Minister Narendra Modi could sow the seeds of its debacle, the Shiv Sena warned its senior ally over "creating a frenzy around Modi's name."

An editorial on Friday in the Shiv Sena organ Saamna, which has party president Uddhav Thackeray as the editor and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut as the executive editor, also took on the BJP over the slogan war between Sena and BJP corporators in the BMC.

Corporators from the two parties had shouted slogans against each other during an event at the BMC headquarters on Wednesday where finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and Uddhav Thackeray were present.

Later, BJP corporator Makarand Narvekar, who was earlier with the Shiv Sena, had alleged he had been roughed up by Shiv Sainiks.

"Even Narendra Bhai will agree with our contention that one should be proud of his name but not create a frenzy around it," said the editorial, adding that repeated sloganeering with Modi's name harmed the dignity of his position.

The Shiv Sena said that late Premier Indira Gandhi's acolytes who had coined the "Indira is India" slogan had "insulted Bharat Mata" and this had led to "the seeds of revolution being sown (during the Emergency)" which led to her defeat. This was despite India's shining victory against Pakistan in the 1971 war.

"But this Indira Gandhi was defeated and we are telling the BJP top brass that this happened because of the despicable show of Indira worship. They will never be able to fight the Shiv Sena with the help of hired political converts," the editorial charged, questioning why BJP corporators had resorted to sloganeering during the function where the state government had handed over the first cheque of the GST compensation to the civic body.

"The true threat to our country lies from converts, be it political converts or religious ones," the editorial said.

The Shiv Sena claimed that it had firmly supported Modi when the "entire world was clamoring against him" and charged that "today's Modi bhakts were silent at that time."

The editorial warned that those who took on the Shiv Sena, including the Communists, Congress and the NCP, had to face electoral debacles.
