Barely 24 hours after taking credit, the Shiv Sena on Sunday said the government's Rs 34,000 crore crop loan waiver scheme  won't fully benefit farmers as there is still a lot of discontent among them. During his interaction with farmers in Nashik district, which emerged as one the leading centres in the six day farmers strike held in the first week of June, the Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said the cut off date of June 30, 2016 should be extended to June 30, 2017 under the crop loan waiver scheme.

Thackeray reiterated that the government announced the crop loan waiver scheme due  to Shiv Sena’s strong demand. ‘’The government’s decision is historic but not satisfactory. Farmers, who are are suffering from burden of debt during April 1, 2012 and June 30, 2016, will get relief as the government has decided to waive loan worth Rs 1.50 lakh. However, the cut off date should be June 30, 2017 instead  of June 30, 2016,’’ he opined.

Further, Thackeray said the government should pay remunerative price to the onion growers  and also to other crops. Besides, the government needs to implement the Dr MS Swaminathan Commission report. ‘’Shiv Sena despite in the government  will remain at the forefront to aggressively take up the farmers issues so that they get due justice,’’ he claimed.

Meanwhile, a core committee comprising more than 30 farmers organizations today rejected the crop loan waiver scheme and threatened to launch a fresh  state wide agitation from July 26 to press demand for complete loan waiver and the implementation of Dr MS Swaminathan Commission report. The decision in this regard was taken at the meeting held this morning.

The core committee convener Ajit Nawale said how the government can't claim the crop loan waiver decision was historic when a large number of farmers have committed suicides in the state. He announced that the core committee will organise awareness meetings on agrarian crisis  across the state between July 9 and 23. Thereafter,  a state wide agitation will be launched from July 26 if the government does not provide total loan waiver.
