Taking potshots at BJP leaders who are demanding that a separate state of Vidarbha be carved out of Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena commended BJP national president Amit Shah for his comments that the party had not promised the creation of a disparate state. It was also sarcastic about the BJP soft-pedaling on its core agenda like abolishing Article 370 which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, a uniform civil code and the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya.

An editorial on Thursday in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana, which has party president Uddhav Thackeray as the editor and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut as the executive editor, commended Shah for stating that the BJP had never promised the creation of a separate state of Vidarbha.

"Business interests of a few from Vidarbha were behind the attempts to wipe off the existence of a unified Maharashtra," the editorial said, adding that the Shiv Sena's strident opposition had put paid to this. The Sena said that Shah's statement had "cleared the clouds of suspicion and taught a lesson to those who talk of dividing Maharashtra" and added that "we feel that if Amit Shah has spoken, it means that actually (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi has spoken through him."

The editorial added that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, union minister Nitin Gadkari, state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar had, during the election campaign, spoken about the plan to create a separate Vidarbha in case they were elected to the power in the state and the centre.

Referring to the BJP retracting its stance on issues of the Ram temple, uniform civil code and Article 370, the editorial said mockingly that "this cannot be called a U-turn or somersault", but "in the present situation, showed that Shah-Modi wanted to take a practical stance and go about their work."

It added that similarly, a practical stance had been taken to junk the Vidarbha demand.
