Shiv Sena makes McDonalds eat humble pie in Mumbai, outlet in Pune shuts

While the incident where a street kid was rejected a meal in Pune is still on the burner, Shiv Sena's Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena or student's wing has gone ahead and taken some street kids to a McDonald's restaurant in Mumbai on Monday.

While the incident where a street kid was rejected a meal in Pune is still on the burner, Shiv Sena's Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena or student's wing has gone ahead and taken some street kids to a McDonald's restaurant in Mumbai on Monday.

Nilesh Narvekar a core committee member of the Sena's Student wing told dna, " We wanted to let people know that we will always stand by everyone irrespective of being in the government or not". He further stated that businesses such as McDonald's should continue to run in cities however they must not disrespect anyone or discriminate on the basis of socio-economic backgrounds.

A report online also stated that a Kolkata NGO called the Committee for Protection of Democratic Rights also treated 15 children from underprivileged backgrounds to a meal at a McDonalds in the city.

What happened in Pune    No place for the underprivileged in city restaurants?​

A McDonalds outlet on JM Road, Pune reportedly denied entry to a street kid on January 10 2015 who wanted to have a soft drink from the joint.

The little boy Aakash was selling balloons on the street when a customer offered to take him in and get him a soft drink. The boy was allegedly pushed by a member of the staff saying that 'such' people as him were not allowed to come inside.  The incident was described in detail through a Facebook post, by a customer, who had brought the child with her into the restaurant. The post soon circulated on social media causing a major public outrage over the discrimination by McDonald's.

Since initial media reports, the fast food giant has suspended the security personnel who was allegedly involved in throwing the 8 year old child out. 

"The concerned security personnel involved have been suspended pending completion of an enquiry," McDonald's said in a statement.

Today, police in Pune asked the authorities at the Jungli Maharaj road outlet of the the fast food chain to keep the restaurant shut. A police van and a few personnel were also deployed outside the McDonald's where the incident allegedly took place. Rumours of a political protest were afloat as well.  

There has been a lot of discussion and debate in the media about a street child being denied entry into a McDonalds outlet in Pune. Though this is being viewed as an isolated incident, the reality may be very different. dna correspondent Pooja Patel reveals she witnessed a similar scene in another McDonalds outlet in Mumbai.

After much outrage on social media, Shiv Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana',"This (McDonalds) incident depicts the gap between the rich and the poor in this country. Discussions on such incidents will continue, but mere discussions will not solve the problem of the poor children."
