Shiv Sena demands skywalk near new civic Headquarters

The Shiv Sena has demanded construction of a skywalk connecting the new Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) head office from Belapur gaon and from the Killa junction side. Leader of opposition in NMMC Saroj Patil said, "For the safety of citizens who are coming to the civic headquarters, a skywalk is a must so that people do not have to cross the road which is busy with heavy vehicles going towards Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust."

She added, "If their demands are not met, Sena will have no option but to launch an agitation." The municipal corporation's head office shifted to Killa junction last month. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport has started bus services from Vashi to the new headquarters, which drops commuters at Killa junction. However, this spot is always busy due to continuous movement of heavy vehicles such as trucks and trailers, as most of them head towards JNPT.

"People have to face hardships while crossing the road and if a skywalk is constructed it will add to the convenience of those coming to the new civic office," said Patil.

She added, "Even though the traffic department has installed signals at the junction, the flow of traffic is continuous from all the sides, as a result pedestrians' lives are at a risk."

A few visitors to the new head office had also complained that the location was inconvenient and bus services were also limited. "Since the office is far away from the railway station and bus depot, there is no option but to rely on autorickshaws to reach the place. Also, the bus services are quite unpredictable," said a Vashi resident, who was visiting the civic headquarters.

When contacted, a civic official said, "The works of citizens are mostly handled at ward-office level and we are working out a system wherein all kinds of works are handled at the ward office itself. Residents do not have to travel all the way to Belapur just to get their work done."
