Amid the ongoing speculation over formation of government in Maharashtra, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Monday alleged that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena can do anything for power.

"I have repeatedly said that BJP and Shiv Sena both want to come to power and can do anything for power. In the elections, both put allegations on each other and today they are ready to again shake hands with each other. This proves that they want power at any cost," Alvi said. The BJP, however, said that it was working on government formation in Maharashtra, and added that the decision would be taken in due course of time.

"The party has already said that this would be decided after Diwali and the parliamentary board of BJP has deputed very senior leaders to look at it and meet with the legislators. Everything will be known in due course," said BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Atul Anjan lashed out at Sharad Pawar whose Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) which has offered external support to the BJP for government formation in the state. "Sharad Pawar is a player and very cunning. If the NCP does not vote, it means reducing the members of the state assembly and letting Bharatiya Janata Party get a majority. This is a strategy. Sharad Pawar does not have any political agenda. He does not believe in communal harmony or in good governance," Anjan said.

Pawar had recently said in an interview that if there is voting for majority in Maharashtra, the NCP will abstain from it. Yesterday, the BJP had announced that the party is willing to form a government in Maharashtra in alliance with the Shiv Sena.

The BJP and Shiv Sena broke their 25-year old alliance ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls over the issue of seat sharing. The BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in Maharashtra winning 122 of the 288 seats. The Shiv Sena finished second with 63 seats.
