Recalling the historical warm relations shared by his country with India, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe promised to remain India’s friend forever.

Speaking at the India-Japan Business Leaders’ Forum, Abe recalled how his grandfather, also a former PM, had remained a friend of India in his lifetime.

“The first Japanese PM who visited India was actually by grandfather. Then PM Nehru had introduced my grandfather as the leader of the nation that he himself respected. As you are aware, Japan was still recovering from the defeat in the world war, and my grandfather was representing the nation which was defeated. This single experience was enough to move the heart of my grandfather and since then he made it his lifetime endeavour to remain as a friend of India forever,” Abe said.

Abe, who wound up his two-day India visit on Thursday, said that like his grandfather, he too will think of himself as a friend of India forever.

“I look forward to further strengthening this friendship with India and Prime Minister Modi,” the Japan PM said.
