Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde stirred a major controversy on Sunday when he alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were running training camps with the objective of promoting Hindu terror across the country.

To prove his point, Shinde cited the examples of the Samjhauta Express blast (February 18, 2007), the Mecca Masjid (May 18, 2007) and Malegaon explosions (September 8, 2006).

"We are trying hard to maintain peace in the country. We are concerned about the injustice prevailing with minorities and infiltration. But on the other hand, I have reports that people from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the RSS are running training camps to encourage Hindu terrorism. We also have an eye on this issue. These camps carried out the Samjhauta Express blast, the Mecca Masjid Blast or the Malegaon Blast and the blame was put on the minority community," Shinde said.

He said it was the RSS that had got all the bombs planted and later blamed it on the minorities.

The BJP condemned the Home Minster for this remarks and sought immediate apologies from UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Home Minister Shinde

Reacting to Shinde's statement, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said: "It is a condemnable, irresponsible and an unfortunate remark. It is an irresponsible remark that the Home Minister has passed. It is an attempt to divide the nation. The BJP condemn Shinde and Congress for this remark."

Later, issuing some sort of clarification, Shinde said whatever he said has already appeared in the media several times over the years and that there was nothing new in it. He said he had made a reference to "Saffron Terrorism" and appeared to reject the view that he had used the words "Hindu Terrorism".
