Former President Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee on Wednesday rejected reports of her joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and hoped that her father will realise how the BJP 'dirty tricks department' operates.

Earlier in the day, some media reports claimed that Sharmistha may contest 2019 parliamentary polls on a BJP ticket and she was in touch with the saffron party.

The development comes as Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Nagpur to attend a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) program, despite criticism and disapproval from opposition parties.

"In the mountains enjoying a beautiful sunset, & suddenly this news that I’m supposedly joining BJP hits like a torpedo! Can’t there be some peace & sanity in this world?," Sharmistha Mukherjee said in a tweet.

She also added that she joined politics because she believes in @INCIndia and would rather leave politics than leave Congress.

In another tweet, she said that Pranab Mukherjee going to Nagpur will give BJP/RSS full handle to plant false stories

"Hope @CitiznMukherjee now realises from today's’ incident, how BJP dirty tricks dept operates. Even RSS wouldn’t believe that u r going 2 endorse its views in ur speech. But the speech will be forgotten, visuals will remain & those will be circulated with fake statements," she said in a tweet.

"@CitiznMukherjee By going 2 Nagpur, u r giving BJP/RSS full handle 2 plant false stories, spread falls rumours as 2day & making it somewhat believable. And this is just d beginning!," she added.

Several Congress leaders have urged Pranab Mukherjee to reconsider his decision. Senior Congress leader M. Veerappa Moily said the attendance of former president Pranab Mukherjee in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) event will create an 'undesirable difference' in the country.

Mahatma Gandhi, former president Zakir Husain, activist Jayaprakash Narayan and commander-in-chief of the Indian Army, Kodandera M. Cariappa had previously been guests at various RSS events.

Meanwhile, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken also spoke to Sharmistha.

"In reply to certain rumors-Just spoke to @Sharmistha_GK, who is out of Delhi- She is a devoted Congress Person and firmly believes in the ideology of @INCIndia. She told me, that she is in politics, just because of her firm faith in the ideology of the Congress Party," Maken tweeted.
