IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal on Monday stepped down as the president of J&K Peoples Movement (JKPM), the party announced.

Faesal, who launched the party last year after quitting the service, was under detention after the abrogation of Article 370 and was released in June this year.

While there is no official announcement, it is being speculated that the topper of 2009 UPSC civil services exam may rejoin the government service.

In an online meeting of State Executive Committee of J&K Peoples Movement (JKPM) on Monday, Faesal's request to spare him from the organisational responsibilities was discussed.

"Dr Shah Faesal had informed State Executive Members that he is not in a position to continue with political activities and wants to be freed from the responsibilities of the organisation," the party said in a statement.

"Keeping in view this request, it was decided to accept his request so that he can better continue with his life and contribute whichever way he chooses," the party statement read.

The statement further said that “unanimously it was decided to appoint current Vice President Feroze Peerzada as President for the party in the interim till formal elections can be held for the post of President."

Earlier, Faesad had dropped JKPM President from his Twitter bio.
