Several events in Mumbai to celebrate World Environment Day

When it comes to celebrating the cause of environmental conservation, Mumbaikars are spoiled for choice on this World Environment Day, which falls on June 5. A variety of organisations have set up a myriad range of activities such as paintings on walls, photo exhibitions, a bicycle rally, and plantation drive. Even the automobile industry is offering free Pollution Under Control check ups for cars.

When it comes to celebrating the cause of environmental conservation, Mumbaikars are spoiled for choice on this World Environment Day, which falls on June 5. A variety of organisations have set up a myriad range of activities such as paintings on walls, photo exhibitions, a bicycle rally, and plantation drive. Even the automobile industry is offering free Pollution Under Control check ups for cars.

Hinduja hospital, Mahim, will be inviting children to paint the walls outside the hospital on the June 5, from 9 am to 12 noon, so as encourage them to showcase their ideas on the environment.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Society for Automotive Fitness & Environment (SAFE) are organising PUC check-ups and issuing free PUC certificates on June 5 from 11 am to 3 pm at Mahindra Dealership, Signal Hill Avenue, Via Reay Road (East), Sewree; to protect our environment by maintaining vehicles and minimising pollution.

Nehru Science Centre will be organising a photo exhibition, which will cover wildlife and nature on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Shri Kakubhai Kothari, a renowned photo-journalist on June 5, 2015, at 11:30 am. This year's theme is 'Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.'

The photography exhibition at BNHS is called "Land of Tiger" and is about wildlife from Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The exhibition will be held from June 3 to 5, and visitors can drop by from 10 am to 7pm daily at Hornbill House hall, near Lion's Gate at Fort. Entry will be free and open for all.

"This exhibition of photos by Sanjay Karkare, Assistant Director, BNHS (Nagpur) covers the rich biodiversity of five tiger reserves, that is, Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Melghat, Navegaon-Nagzira and Bor. Nagpur, located in the heart of the Satpuda tiger landscape, is rightly called the 'Tiger Capital of the World'. There is no other city in the world with so many tiger reserves in such close proximity. The photos have been clicked during the last 10 years, during which Mr Karkare and his team have been conducting nature education and awareness programmes in and around these tiger reserves. The pictures depict landscapes, insects, avian beauties, various herbivores and of course, the tiger. The exhibition also focuses on and aims to create awareness about important conservation issues from this landscape," said Atul Sathe, Assistant Director-Education & Communication, BNHS-India,

The Orchid hotel will be celebrating World Environment Day by organising a rally-cum-plantation drive."We invite Mumbaikars from the vicinity to join us in the plantation drive at NP Thakkar Road Garden, Vile Parle East," said vice president of The Orchid, Rajesh Kumar Gupta.

The rally will begin from The Orchid hotel at 10.30 am on June 5 and will proceed towards the NP Thakkar Road Garden, Vile Parle. Orchid staff will be carrying placards with environment messages exhorting citizens to take care of Mother Earth. The tree plantation will be done at the garden. The local corporator Jyoti Alavani will also be a part of the plantation drive.

Cycle2Work is launching its 4th "Smart Commute" edition. Cycle2Work is an independent effort taken up by Project Green Mile to inspire Mumbaikars to use cycles to commute to work. The event will be held on June 5 from 6.45 am to 9.15 am.
