At least seven persons were killed and 40 feared to be trapped under the debris as two multi-storey buildings collapsed in Madhavnagar locality here in the wee hours today.
The incident occurred behind Atlandara area around 4.30am when two three-storey building came crashing down, catching the sleeping occupants unawares, H J Tapariya, chief fire brigade officer of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation said.
Manish Bhardwaj, Vadodara Municipal Commissioner, Satish Sharma, City Police Commissioner and city Mayor Bharat Shah and other senior officials have rushed to the site.
According to Tapariya, about 13 to 14 families were staying there.
"Around seven persons were killed, and so far 14 people have been rescued. Another 40 are believed to be trapped under the debris," District Collector, Vadodara, Vinod Rao said.
The fire brigade personnel have rescued four persons, while several people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble. The rescue operations are going on in full swing.
The army personnel and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are assisting the fire brigade officials in the rescue operations.
The injured have been rushed to SSG hospital for treatment.
Talking to PTI, city mayor Bharat Shah said, "I was admitted to hospital and soon after learning about this mishap, I am on my way to the site.
Atladara is a newly developed locality after merger of Ataladara village with Vadodara city a few years ago.
While nine people have been rescued, 35-40 people are still feared to be trapped.

The three-storeyed buildings were part of a huge housing complex constructed by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority or VUDA. There are 54 other similar buildings in the housing complex.
