The cold-blooded murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and Rashtriya Rifles soldier Aurangzeb was the last straw that prompted the Centre to revoke unilateral suspension of operations against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Other than the twin killings, the Centre was getting increasingly restive as all its efforts to reach out to the separatists through civil society had failed during the month of Ramzan.

Informed government sources said the decision was arrived at in Friday meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in which all the pros and cons related to revocation and resumption of ceasefire were deliberated upon in the light of the two killings amid deteriorating law and order situation.

Despite arriving at the decision, the Centre, however, decided to break the news later to not to dampen the spirit of Eid celebrations.

Rajnath Singh tried the last ditch effort to rope in the separatists into talks during his visit to the Valley on June 7 and 8, but it failed to yield any result because of the overbearing writ of the PoK based United Jehad Council not to hold talks unless India accepts Kashmir as a dispute.

Home ministry sources said a positive response of public to the truce was seen in a sharp decline stone-pelting incidents which was unpalatable to Pakistan's terror masters. They continued to push up the scale of violence by infiltrating terrorists to kill innocent civilians while the security forces were duty-bound by their commitment to the cessation of operations.

The unilateral ceasefire was also providing time to terrorists to regroup and find new safe havens, said sources.
