Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Acharya Dharmendra has been booked under sedition and defamation charges for controversial remarks he allegedly made against Mahatma Gandhi in May.

An FIR against Dharmendra was lodged on Monday with Jalupura police station here following a local court's directive on a complaint filed by one Rafique Khan. The court had recently ordered the local police to lodge an FIR against Dharmendra the matter was brought before it.

The FIR was filed under section 124 A (sedition), 295 A (outraging religious feelings of any class) and 500 (defamation), SHO Jalupura Rajesh Dhaka said on Tuesday, adding that police were investigating these charges.

Dharmendra had allegedly made the remarks during a Satsang programme at an Aashram in Madhya Pradesh in May.
