Senior decorated naval officer accused of molesting junior

A senior and decorated naval officer is in the docks after one of his subordinates has accused him of molesting her.

According to the complainant, who is a Navy doctor, the accused officer, also a doctor and her senior, molested her twice recently, including at a top naval officer's house in the national capital.

The lady officer, who is of the Lieutenant Commander rank, in her complaint to the superiors said that her senior, an officer of the Surgeon Commander rank, molested her first at the residence of one of the Vice Admirals of Navy, while both had gone to attend to his ailing mother who is bed ridden.

Reliable sources said that the alleged incident happened at the residence Chief of Personnel (COP) Vice Admiral AR Karve. Karve was on duty at Vishakapatnam on the day the incident happened and his wife works and stays in Mumbai.

Sources added that the complainant told her superiors that the first incident of sexual harassment occurred on May 6 when she asked to use the washroom at Karve's house. Even as she reported it, the accused made advances again days later forcing her to escalate it, said a senior source.

On being asked, Navy admitted that a complaint was "received following which a Board of Inquiry (BoI) was instituted immediately." "We are seized of the matter. The BoI is in final stages of completion and is likely to submit its report. The Navy will take appropriate action post that. Indian Navy has a zero tolerance on such matters," Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma told dna.

Meanwhile, a news agency report said the senior Navy officer has been sent on leave.

The accused was recently decorated with a Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for "distinguished service of an exceptional order."

"We are seized of the matter. The BoI (Board of Inquiry) is in final stages of completion and is likely to submit its report. The Navy will take appropriate action post that. Indian Navy has a zero tolerance on such matters,"
