While uncertainty reigned on Wednesday over who would succeed Rahul Gandhi, who, taking responsibility for the party's defeat in Lok Sabha elections, resigned from the post of party president on Wednesday, sources suggested that long-time Congress associate Motilal Vora could be the interim chief.

According to the constitution of the All India Congress Committee, "in the event of...the death or resignation of the President...the senior-most General Secretary will discharge the routine functions of the President until the (Congress) Working Committee appoints a provisional President pending the election of a regular President...".

However, Vora, who is believed to be closed to Rahul and the Gandhi family, said on Wednesday that he had no information about such a proposal. "I have no information regarding me being made the interim president of the party," Vora said. He praised Rahul's role in the party and said the latter did a commendable job.

"Rahul Gandhi offered to resign on May 25 in the meeting of Congress Working Committee, but the members of the CWC unanimously rejected his proposal as they knew him being the president was important for the party. The role he played in campaigning for the party was very important in all the states during Lok Sabha elections," Vora said. He added that a meeting of the CWC would be called up soon to decide the future course of action. Vora served as the CM of Madhya Pradesh from 1985 to 1988 before he was made a minister in the union cabinet. He was also the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 1993 to 1996.

Hectic parleys were on to decide on a new party chief.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday expressed disappointment over Rahul's decision to resign and said that the Gandhi scion should have led the party with the same dynamism and fighting spirit with which he had led the Congress's campaign during the elections.

Amarinder admitted that Congress is going through a difficult time but expressed confidence that together, the party will be able to cope with this situation. "It is a difficult time for the party, but together, we will get through it, to come out stronger and bigger, with Rahul's vision continuing to guide us," Singh said.
