Sedition case registered against student-activist Valarmathi

The Chennai city police have registered a sedition case against student-activist Valarmathi, who has been lodged in Salem Central Prison for protesting against the Greenfield Chennai-Salem Highway project last week for making critical remarks again the police. She was the third person to be arrested under the sedition charge in the state with the police cracking down on the protestors and activists post anti-Sterlite protest on May 22 that led to the killing of 13 people in the police firing.

The police slapped sedition charge on Valarmathi for her provocative speech at the audio launch of the film Achamillai Achamillai at Vadapalani here in January this year. She had said that one-day people would attack police by grabbing their lathi, which they now use against us. Last year, she was arrested by Salem police for distributing pamphlets, urging the Government Arts and Science College students to extend support to the protest against the Neduvasal and Kathirmangalam hydrocarbon projects. She was later detained under the Goondas Act, citing six pending cases against her.

On Tuesday, Tiruvannamalai police detained three journalists for covering the black flag protest against the highway project. They were let go after news channels started flashing it. The police also arrested environmental activist Piyush Manush and actor Masur Ali Khan, who were protesting against the Chennai-Salem Highway project.

Environmental activist RS Mugilan, who has been languishing in prison since October last in connection with cases related to protest against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, was slapped with one more charge of sedition by Karur police.

She was the third person to be arrested under the sedition charge.
