Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has directed to increase security of the family members of Kasganj riot victim Chandan Gupta on Friday after they allegedly received death threats.

The District Magistrate RP Singh said that a section of the PAC was posted at Gupta’s residence and personal security guards have been provided to his father Sushil Gupta who had allegedly received a threat by motorcycle-borne masked men on Thursday.

Sushil Gupta had lodged a complaint that a few masked men came to his residence when he was sitting outside and threatened him of dire consequences, if he did not stop pursuing the murder case of his son.

The SP Kasganj Piyush Srivasatava, however, has a different story to tell. He said that a correspondent of a video news agency had put words into Sushil Gupta’s mouth to make a story on threat.

“We have taken it very seriously and informed news agency’s head office in Delhi. We are also seeking legal action against the erring correspondent and cameraman of the news agency,” said the SP Kasganj.

Srivastava, however, claimed that as a precautionary measure, police personnel were deployed at family’s residence for their safety and security and to keep round the clock vigil.

Meanwhile, the Friday prayers passed off peacefully without any fresh incident in Kasganj. A Peace Committee meeting was held on Thursday in which prominent persons from both sides had given an undertaking that they will maintain peace and communal harmony during Friday prayers. Heavy security arrangements were made at all mosques and sensitive areas during the prayers.

Communal clashes broke out in this western Uttar Pradesh town after stones were pelted on a 'Tiranga Yatra' taken out to celebrate the Republic Day. The police said some people were riding motorcycles carrying the tricolour and were chanting Vante Mataram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai. When they reached a minority community-dominated locality, some "anti-social elements" pelted stones and opened fire.

In this firing, Chandan was killed and two others were injured. A cheque of Rs 20 lakh was given to Chandan's family members who demanded that martyr status be accorded to him. The police arrested the main accused, Saleem, but his two brothers charged with the murder are absconding.

Combing operations have been intensified to nab the brothers, Naseem and Waseem. Additional DG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said according to the FIR and statements by some of the witnesses, Saleem was the person who opened fire from the roof or balcony of his house that killed the college student. The UP government had come under fire over the clashes with even Governor Ram Naik terming the Kasganj violence a "blot" on the state. Opposition parties have also attacked the state government over the clashes.
