Backed by Centre's resolve to break the back of national democratic front of Bodoland-Songbijit faction (NDFB-S) guilty of massacring 78 tea tribe adivasis in Assam last month, the security forces on Thursday nabbed three top leaders of the outfit and handed over them to the national investigation agency (NIA).
In a top secret operation aided by the IB and Assam Police, the Nagaland police moved swiftly to nab SS commander 3rd battalion of NDFB (S) Ajoi Basumatary alias B.Buhum (32 yrs), SS deputy commander 14th battalion Khamrei Basumatary alias Udla (35 yrs) and self styled forest secretary of the outfit Dilip Basumatary alias Bir Baisa (40).
It was under the direction and leadership of Ajoy, the NDFB-S cadres had massacred 36 persons, including women and children, in Sonitpur district of Assam on December 23.

Calling it a big breakthrough that is going to prove extremely important in cleansing Assam from the dreaded NDFB-S, a senior officials said, the operation was a success because of seamless coordination between various agencies and the Nagaland police.
"All the three catches are very important and will leave NDFB-S in a lurch. Their top leader, Songbijit is hiding in Myanmar while Bidai who took the decision to massacre and his deputy Bidai are hiding in the jungles of Assam. We are closing in on the last two and hope to catch or neutralise them," a senior security official said.
The strong coordinated action – operation clean up - by security forces that includes Army, paramilitary forces and the Assam state police taken since January 8 has so far resulted in the arrest of 16 office bearers of the NDFB-S, 33 linkmen with the outfit, who arrange logistics for them and 50 NDFB-S cadres thus reducing the outfit's strength by significant numbers in Assam.
The action by SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) in Manas Park on Monday night also left one NDFB-S platoon commander dead.
