Security forces in Kashmir have gunned down four terrorists, including a top Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander who was involved in the killing of Army jawan Aurangzeb in June 2018. With this, 10 terrorists have been eliminated in the past three days.
Acting on inputs, an anti-terror operation was launched on Friday night in Panzgam village in Awantipora area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir. In the ensuing encounter, forces gunned down three terrorists.
Among them was Hizbul man Showkat Dar, who was part of a group that kidnapped Aurangzeb, a rifleman with 44 Rashtriya Rifles, and shot dead the soldier when he was travelling to his home in Poonch in a private vehicle.
"He [Dar] was involved in planning and executing a series of terror attacks in the area and many other civilian atrocities. He was part of a group involved in the killing of Army jawan Aurangzeb last year in 2018. He was also involved in the killing of a policeman Aqib Ahmad Wagay last year," the J&K police said in a statement.
Two other terrorists, identified as Irfan War from Sopore and Muzaffar Sheikh from Pulwama districts, were also killed. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the scene of the encounter.
Security forces also engaged terrorists in a brief shootout during pre-dawn hours in Dehruna area of Anantnag on Saturday. However, sources said, the terrorists – at least two in number – escaped. Clashes between civilians and security personnel were also reported from Pulwama and Anantnag during the gun battle.
Later in the day, a team of J&K police, Army and CRPF launched a search operation in Hathlangoo village of Sopore and killed one terrorist. Sources have identified him as Waseem Ahmad Naik from Awantipora. They said Waseem had been missing from his home since March.
