The Madhya Pradesh government pressed charges under the National Security Act on Saturday against a man from Gwalior for his alleged role in a milk adulteration case. Accused Ummed Singh Rawat was arrested after his factory was raided and large quantities of spurious milk was seized.

Rawat is the second milk trader to be booked under the stringent NSA in the past three days. Earlier, a trader from Ujjain had been arrested under NSA. Both had been booked for adulterating milk in 2017 and 2018.

The action follows an investigation by Gwalior Collector Anurag Chaudhary and subsequent raids to curb the sale of milk adulteration across the state. Earlier, the team had carried out several raids on milk factories in Morena district and other parts of Madhya Pradesh. Huge amounts of adulterated milk had been seized at the time.

The police have so far arrested several people in connection with the case. Investigating officials said milk adulteration will come down in the coming days as the team will continue to carry out raids across the state and take strict action against those committing the offence.

The government had sent over 1,600 milk samples for testing. It was found that in few samples carried fake logos of reputed brands.

Of those involved in the fake milk trade, two men, who had humble beginnings as milk vendors on bikes, became owners of properties worth crores of rupees in seven years.

Devendra Gurjar and Jaiveer Singh Gurjar of Dhakpura village in Morena district, used to work in a factory that made adulterated milk for a few years and after realising its profit potential, started their own business.

In the last 15 months, an investigation by a Special Task Force revealed that the duo had a turnover of Rs 45 crore and invested Rs 2 crore to build a milk factory.

During the raids, the police have seized sodium thiosulfate, caustic soda, chloroform, Palmolein oil, hydrogen peroxide, maltodextrin and shampoo among other products that are apparently used to prepare the adulterated milk.
