Noted screenwriter and Bollywood actor Salman Khan's father has denied the Padma Shri Award. The reason Khan cited is that the government is quite late in realising his contribution to the industry.
As many as 104 civilians have been selected for the Padma Awards this year that will be conferred to them on Monday. Other than Salim Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, PV Sindhu, Rajnikanth, LK Advani amongst others.
Salim Khan has reportedly said that the status of Padma Shri does not match his status and his body of work. He has been reportedly stated saying that he deserves a Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan, but not a Padma Shri.
“For years, the central government has ignored me, honouring a number of my peers as well as juniors in the industry. Some three days ago, when I heard that my name is on the Padma awards list, I thought that I’m finally getting what I deserve. But when I came to know that the ministry has chosen me for Padma Shri, I felt it does not match my status and work,” Khan has been reportedly quoted.
Salim Khan, alongwith lyricist Javed Akhtar has co-written many hits of 70s and 80s. Their biggest hits were Don, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Andaz, Haathi Mere Saathi, Trishul, Kranti, Deewar, Sholay, Mr. India to name a few.
On Sunday, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar declined the Padma Awards as well. Baba Ramdev reasoned saying him, being a saint, should be selflessly serving the nation and not awarded for his work. Sri Sri Ravishankar thanked the government for considering him, but wanted somebody else to be honoured with the same prestigious award.
