The VHP reaction comes in the wake of NCM's recent decision to launch a helpline for Muslims in distress
Pushing their right-wing agenda with the Central government, the RSS-affiliate Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday demanded scrapping of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) as well as the Ministry of Minority Affairs. The VHP reaction comes in the wake of NCM's recent decision to launch a helpline for Muslims in distress.
Calling it an unnecessary step, the Sangh Parivar outfit said "Muslims and Christians are not the victims but perpetrators of hate". It appealed to the Centre that there should not be a separate ministry and commission for minorities as one National Human Rights Commission is enough for protection of all citizens.
A resolution in this regard was passed in a meeting of Central Governing Council of the VHP, which was endorsed by its sister organisations like the Bajrang Dal, Durga Vahini and others. The resolution was put forth in a meeting of saints in Haridwar early this month, which has been passed by the council.
"Minority Commission creates a false feeling that the Muslim and Christian communities are being persecuted. The reality is they are the ones who are responsible for the persecution of not only Hindus but other minority communities like the Sikhs and the Buddhists. With the help of the Minority Commission, they gather sympathy and carry out their anti-Hindu and anti-national activities," said Surendra Jain, Joint Secretary, VHP.
Jain gave the example of Monday's clashes in Meerut after Eid prayers. "Every time there is a Muslim festival, something or the other happens. If Muslims don't mend their ways, they won't be able to celebrate Eid anymore. Clearly, they are not the oppressed lot," he said.
VHP had, in 2014, approached the NCM chairperson with a list of complaints from the majority community. According to sources in VHP, at that time, the Commission had said the law does not allow taking up the issues of the majority community, after which they stopped approaching it.
"We do not have any hopes from the NCM that it will do justice to the majority community as well," said VHP Spokesperson Vinod Bansal.
It also reiterated its demands for enactment of laws on cow protection and construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.
ON BEEF PARTIES
- The VHP has said 'gau rakshaks' (cow protectors) are "worthy of respect" and that they come out on streets to save cows as police have failed to do so.
- It said events like beef parties have become a regular feature in some states.
